My name is Jamie. I live south of Lincoln, Nebraska. Ever since I can remember I've sought out horses, and have been lucky enough to get to ride them too, since I grew up in town with a 'horse illiterate' family I didn't know if that would happen. I had friends who taught me to ride with the 'Hold on Jamie!' attitude, got to go to a few Girl Scout riding camps, finally started taking english riding lessons in middle school to learn to jump, and got my first horse, Clue, my junior year of high school. I've done everything with Clue, from jumping and dressage to moving cattle and showing 4H and open shows... and now pretty much just trail riding.
I got the other member of our team, Cherokee, 10 years ago about this time of year (January/February) for my yet unborn daughter. He hasn't been as trained as Clue, but he's a great trail horse and is learning to drive (my other passion, as I've 'spent some hours' driving draft teams in college and one of my jobs).
Personally, I doubt I'll be logging a lot of miles since my second child was born just over a year ago, and I was diagnosed with MS 5 yrs ago and have been fighting to keep most of my riding ability... which is there, just not as strong as it once was. It's the baby putting the damper on my ride time! Looking very much forward to playing with my new GPS and logging some miles!!

Still trying to get all this figured out! Talk about a late start. Late jumping on the GPS bandwagon, late figuring out how to get the info on my computer, late realizing that entering my miles was as easy as writing it here! Well, here goes...

I'm not dead last!! Today is my anniversary and my husband and I were able to make it out and ride this morning. We took the two horses I had when we met and rode 6 years ago - the bay (Clue)'s gotten lazier but my 'painted wonder' (Cherokee) is a lot better trained, though just as stubborn. lol We even loped a short ways! Nate hasn't even ridden for about a year and a half. Here's our stats;

Tonight was more of the ride I should have done yesterday for building up. I have been choosing Clue the past few ride, so I gabbed my painted boy. Boy could you tell. lol Cherokee rode pretty well, until we were coming home and the neighbor's horses ran up to see us. No troubles keeping him to a walk, but I sure could feel the energy wanting out and we had a few discussions. Stood like a statue while we worked at getting my butt off (need to work on SOMETHING to correct whatever weakness is making this hard!), but sure enough, we turned him out and he rolled and then took off runnin'.

Okay, yesterday's ride was purely to get a little bit more miles in on my feeble attempt to keep up with the other riders, tough I'm pretty happy if I can remain ahead of 50th. Today I set out for a little bit more then yesterday, since there was less wind... though I made a new discovery about life with my MS, my previous 'hibernations' during my 'special' time of the month WEREN'T me just being lazy. I got in a little over 2 miles with a small amt of trotting today and oh my goodness, I was seriously not feeling in very good shape by the time I got home. Grr. Cherokee was still off from yesterday's wind too, had the first spook at pheasants that I remember, though it was still more of a hesitation and a 'Whoa, what was that?!'.

This is a great way to measure what I'm doing. Just looking, this is the first ride I've just rode, no stopping and chatting with someone, or just resting.
Oh buddy, I got some decent miles in, despite the wind today! Yesterday I didn't get good time to get out, could've done a short ride but chose not to because of the wind. Wind was just as bad today, but figured that if I didn't ride in the wind I'd never ride, living in the plains especially.

Getting sick of my hubby's green broke SEVEN yr old horse, Pat, sitting in the pasture without a job, so I grabbed my ponying lead I used when breaking Cherokee (just a 10 ft cotton lead rope with a bull snap) and begged my sweet hubby to grab Pat when he got Clue and tacked up for me. (I WILL be tacking my own horse by dressage next week and STILL be able to ride! lol) He didn't want me to (worrier), but I convinced him. Stupid me. I realized I'd never ponied Pat (hubby's horse and all), luckily, Clue's the champ of ponying. Knees hurt like crap tonight with Pat's constant banging into

Clue, whacking my knee with his jaw and couple stretches when he had to go to the bathroom and planted roots through his feet. At 19, Clue took a little warming up too, reminding him that Pat slamming into him doesn't mean he moves over, he pushes back, and that he doesn't let Pat nip at him or rush in front, but by the end of our 2+ miles he was doing his part keeping Pat in line. Love that horse! Pat got some good exposure - rode by cows, ponies (lol, both their heads shot up when one neighed, 'spose they thought they were more cows... and Pat pranced all the way past), several cars and pickups meeting and passing us, our neighbor joining us with her dog and rotating between leading and following (and the dog! lol), and getting home after sunset.

Made it to my first Platte River Riders ride in what seems like eons! Got there an hour past the 'ride out' time because I went to pick up a friend (who also happens to be the only one who'd been at the park we were riding), and got lost. rofl Looking forward to many more Wed. night rides this summer! Rode Cherokee, who nearly kept pace with the gaited mule - jarring ride, I think I'll put my old man Clue to work next ride.

Jayda and I went for a mother's day ride! She rode my old (19) show horse, and I rode 'her' horse Cherokee, making absolutely certain he's ready to be her's to ride pretty much when ever - he is, and at 11, I do believe she's ready for it. She's shown an ability to saddle on her own, and today's ride went very well! We rode around our section, and met the horse neighbor on the other side - Jody, a barrel racer. GREAT day!

Don't know how to record this one because I came off. Also a lesson on always wearing your garmin instead of putting it in the saddle bag. First time I've hit the dirt in 10 years, I believe, and first on Cherokee (other than a boggled attempt at doing maneuvers I didn't understand when I pulled him over on me). I came off at 57.02 - right where his speed increases. Which, is just another lesson in the fact that I can't ride more than about 50 minutes, or a mile and a half, without taking a break. As my body was protesting the fast pace of the ride, I thought I could just hold Cherokee back and wait for the riders to come back. He didn't want anything to do with it. My upper body gave completely out and I lost the ability to whoa him and school, so we were traveling at Cherokee's command. When I could no longer sit upright, and fell on the horn, Cherokee took that as a sign to canter and catch up with the group. I came off. The other riders got Cherokee caught and me back on and the lady I trailered in with rode back towards to trailer with me. Fine, but I was still having troubles with my body and we opted to stop and get me off on the south side of Old Chenney while she went back to the trailer and called one of our husbands to come get me. In the mean time, I waited until the trail ride came back to where I was sitting. One of the riders (on a gorgeous Morgan!) knew my trailer friend and had spoken to her on the phone and said her husband was coming, but it'd be good if we could get me back on and to the road. SO, I actually rode farther than Cherokee went by himself. lol Anyway, they got my 'dumped off' on the north side of Old Chenney and I waited again, this time for the truck. Lessons: always have your phone (and garmin, if that matters) on your body and once you know your body's limitations, speak them before riding out with a group of people. Too bad I didn't realize how 100% needed my rest periods were before I had to eat dirt!

Jamie, I am so sorry you took a tumble. And like you said, now you know. Hope you are feeling okay today.
From my own experience on the PRR and bigger group rides is the front if the bunch usually doesn't know what the back is doing. Especially on the PRR you may have some out front who is going a faster pace. Which is fine as long as they don't run past other riders and smart ahead before chg their pace. I am concerned that you were left behind alone with a struggling horse. And not just you, I wouldn't want anyone to be left alone on these rides.
I am hoping that wasn't the case but I will reaffirm with the groups that no one is left to their selves. Any one of us could have had this same struggle and come off. And if you don't come with a friend, please don't be shy about asking someone to ride with you and stay with you.
Hang in there, friend.
No, we were in between the front half and the back half. I'd come with a friend, but her horse was giving her fits too. Really just a lesson in letting the group know about me before hand and have a small group who doesn't mind taking breaks ready. :-)
Rode with my daughter again, on the naughty tobiano (FB character - SUCH a fitting name!). Cherokee was a poo head from the time I got on him. Went and worked him some with maneuvers we'd found got his head with himself, but he still didn't feel right, so I gave him to my husband to go lope some on (and turned off my Garmin). Poo head bucked some with him! Hubby worked him 'til he decided it was a better deal to cooperate, and my girl and I headed out (she was riding my 'good horse', who I swear was watching Cherokee's antics in the pasture thinking, 'Give it up man, she won't let it go, even if she can't do it anymore! This mostly walk life is sweet - don't mess it up!' Anyway, Cherokee was back to behaving after that and we had a pretty good ride.

'Lesson' with Jayda - down the road; on attitude and how NOT to talk to your mother, then field and in the yard on control and seat and started work at the trot with her on Clue. Cherokee would like being the instructor's horse if she'd let him eat the whole time (though I should've just followed her around and around and gotten more mileage!). lol

Poker run at Two River Sate Rec Area (SRA) today. Got to go with my hubby and daughter while my in-laws watched the baby/toddler. Girl worked handing out cards, and Nate and I had a great day. Found out more interesting things about my ms too. Cherokee is a 'power walker' and tires me out, but switching to Clue, who moseys more, is about as good as taking a break for me - cool. I switched my Garmin from horse to horse when I switched, so they're all 'my miles'. lol I got 2 pair, kings and aces, but they only paid out to the top 3, who all had 3 of a kind.

My dear husband found a deal on a silver decorated saddle set and I was thinking of riding in it for the funeral procession I'm thinking of riding in in two weeks, so I wanted to try it out and see how I'd do riding in the heat. Neither was good. Saddle left two little dry spots on Clue's withers (confirming my first reaction that it looked tight) and I was near jello after I got off with the mile we rode and almost 40 minutes I was out. After all my checking, I may not go after all. :-(

Hadn't ridden for what was seeming like FOR-EVER, so once I went out after the kids were in bed and the sun was setting I realized the heat had gone down after the sun had and talked my dear hubby into saddling Cherokee and I went down the road a little was. Mounted from the ground (with a little help, lol) and did a bit of trotting. I must be doing something right in the house because I didn't seem to be any weaker than the last time I worked on my 7-7-7 trotting exercise. Had a couple cars blow by us when we were almost home - first one was speeding and I was glad we were way off the road and I think I surprised the second one 'cause they actually slowed some, even though I was way off the road too.

Darn this heat! So I skipped our group ride, again, and begged my husband to go out with me since it was cooler tonight, but my body was still feeling the effects of the heat. Plus, I wanted him to work his mare more, and it's just nice to have a ride together. Waited until the kids were in bed, with my 11 year old on 'in case the 20 month old wakes up' duty and headed out. Was glad we had the 2 oldest horses on our place as a tractor parade came down the road from somewhere! Had to have been at LEAST a dozen tractors, with lights on chug chugging down the road. No incidents on the way to the corner, even trotted some, and then Jayda (my girl) calls - the 2 we'd left at home were out! It was pretty much dark anyway so we headed home. Get close and can hear Jayda screaming at the horses so Nate trots the old mare back up to the house and I keep Clue walking, something he's always struggled with when other horses are going faster. He did, until a car was coming and I could see Cherokee coming down the drive to meet Nate and I asked him to trot. Between me keeping him at a trot and the car coming at us with their headlights on, we got a little sideways, but no bucking like he was known for when he was younger - yay. Anyway, Nate had rode into the pen (darn horses had taken the gate from the pasture into the pen off it's hinges! and then Nate had forgot to close the pen before we'd left) and everyone was back in by the time Clue and I rode up. Not as much as I'd hoped to ride tonight, maybe in the morning.

NO WONDER I was already titling this ride 'the death march' in my head, I went a mile further than I've ever gone in one ride this year, since keeping track!! Things were going well (actually did the whole ride!), had to stop sometime after we'd turned around after we figured out I was having so much trouble staying strait because mt stirrups were uneven and things straightened out for me, but then, that last, probably a mile, trailers out of sight, my muscles were screaming at me that they were D-O-N-E. I had hooked my reins on the saddle horn and was just holding on, done (thank goodness I have a horse I can do that with!). Did find out what muscles I need to be focusing on though - I sat up straighter when I held onto the back of my cantle, so I'm thinking that it's weak back muscles bringing me down... makes sense if I'd just thought about it though. Anyway, that last bit was excruciating and all I could think was, 'WHAT did I do?! I committed myself to a death march/ride!'. Funny, 'cause a little ways from the 'turn around' bridge, I was thinking it was time to head back - must have been a 1/2 mile from the bridge. lol Luckily I was riding with two great ladies who stopped when I needed my short breaks, got me ON in the first place, PEALED me off when we got back, untacked my horse and loaded him, and got me back in my truck! What a ride, can I do 2 4 milers tomorrow and hit 100?! :-D

Took my daughter and the neighbor boy out for a ride, riding my husband's old mare... who'd never really been asked to stop and wait, stand or do circles in her life - pretty sure she was cussing me out about as much as I do her when I have to deal with her ground manners! lol
Congrats on 100! You did it!
This ride here won't show on the leader board until next update. Just wanted you to know I didn't miss it but had just finished getting things ready to publish.

Rode at the old Rock Creek Station again last night with my childhood BFF who's moved, actually, within 10 miles of Rock Creek, and my neighbor. It was a PRR ride and I was actually hopeing for others, but it made the night enjoyable with Alesha's and my catching up and the 'get to know ya' with Chanda and Alesha. Many deer were seen and rode with (I never knew you could ride so easily beside deer!) and the night was ended with a serenade of Cyotes as we loaded up. Good night!

Rode my husband's 24 year old mare in the rain, to help get her back into the 'cause I asked you to' attidude... and get some more miles. My daughter came with, and our plan HAD been to go around the section, but a mile going into the wind and she was pretty much done, so we headed home and she got off and untacked and then I headed back out with the old mare and made her stand decent while I talked with my neighbor.

Having issues with my Garmin loading to both the base camp and the connect. Been working with the support staff, but I find my last two rides with round numbers for mileage and distance to be suspicious. Garmin is reset and a support e-mail is on the way....
Yesterday seems to be around what we rode, but I hope I haven't been loosing 10ths of miles! (lol, like it matters on the bottom of the board. lol) Anyway, my neighbor and I took her two kids (9-ish and 13-ish) and my 11 yr out for a ride down the road. It has her two's first ride out of the yard, well ecept for her youngest who'd came out to ride with us before in our pasture. Her older kid wasn't too happy because she'd ridden 'mom's queit horse, who didn't really see a point to following us all while her younger brother was on my horse who wanted to stay with the horse I was riding (that he's lived with for the last 10+ years! lol). Anyway, pretty sure all had fun, even with the frustration.

Forgot to mention who we rode. I rode my Cherokee (who Beau rode last time he was here, but has shown too much 'get up and go' for me to want to put a newbe on him). Beau, Chanda's younger boy, rode my Clue and Jayda, my girl, rode her dad's old mare Firecracker. Chanda, my neighbor and horseback adventure accomplise, as on her Bud - a TWH who acts like he's rather run barrels and added some livelyness to the ride! And her girl, Raeann, was on her Baron, who has been our steady ride companion, but didn't want to follow the full mile out the other kids and I did. lol
Tonight Jayda let me give her an actual lesson... with only a little 'I can't do it!'s and 'I'm just a kid and I've never done this!!'s. lol She's decided she likes her english saddle and we were working on the 'secure seat' skills at the trot to get her ready to canter. She really did a good job, even figured out how to sit up when whe posted! We rode all the way around the bean feild in the water ways when we were done, which she hadn't done yet. Jayda rode Firecracker english, I rode Cherokee western, maybe I'll ride english too next time. I also got dismounted like everyone else, vs either sliding off the side or having someone pull me off like I have been!

Jayda and I rode again, with not much focus on 'lessons' - just riding and not blowing things out of proportion. First, 'dad' had used Firecracker's bridle on his Patrick this past weekend and had taken the knot out of her split reins (OH NO!!) and she had to retie them from my directions since I was already on Clue, then I tried to pony the pony - um, no... ponying a 11hh pony off of a 16hh grouch of a boss horse doesn't work too well, so we headed out into the bean field they'd just harvested some of and did what Jayda didn't think was possible - went between the combine and the grain tuck the farmer had left in the feild (:-0), and finished off the ride navigating the waterways in the feild.

Connect is finally reading my garmin! I've been using Base Camp to down load, put that hasn't been reading the .1s very much. Took my hubby and daughter down to Rock Creek Station for one last hoo-ra ride (first for all 3 of us since my son was born!!) for the year. We had a great ride and, for those who have ridden there, I got Cherokee to 'talk to' the buffalo and the indian, Jayda came with and got Firecracker to stand calmly while Cherokee and I thuroughly checked them out. Nate got close with Patrick, our green 7 yr old, but didn't push it since he settled. Up and down the hilly trails there, over logs and rocks and past the wagons, everyone did spectacular - Jayda, 11 yrs old, prefered her English saddle on the 24 yr old mare and Nate rode his 7 yr old who'd only been on a handful of trails all (people and horses) handled the roughest terain they'd seen, or seen in years, like they'd always ridden it.
Not sure what to do about my readings, I know similar things have happened to others, but my battery ran out halfway through the ride. Here's what I recorded at least:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/230679115 didn't get my trail from me getting lost for about 45 minutes. :-(

Got a wild hair tonight and grabbed the 5 yr old my MIL gave us. She was a camp horse and seems pretty mello, so I wasn't too worried. LOL Never mind that she's only been here almost two weeks and that I won't get on my hubby's 7 yr old, though I do believe I'm gonna be choosing him for work no on. lol Blondee wasn't bad, but not quite what I should be riding a lot.

MS being a hinderance - my a$$! Okay, maybe some 'cause I'm still having too need someone to either saddle and/or unsaddle for me if I really want to do some riding, but once I'm on I'm solid gold. :-)
Anyway, I took Cherokee, my 12 yr old, to work ponying his BFF Patrick (the 7 yr old) for the first time tonight - Pat's 2nd time being ponied and Cherokee's first time ponying anyone other than Clue. Went, O.K. Cherokee would forget he was working and wanna mess with Pat, and Pat doesn't poop and walk well when being ridden, but does NOT being ponied. He actually stopped dead once so hard it pulled my hand into the horn and I dropped the rope even though I had it dallied. Cherokee and I got him though when he went to eat in the ditch.

Rode with the newest person to the area, who helped me out emensly so we could ride together. Damn ms, but it's finally sinking in that if I want to ride, I'm just going to have to ask for, accept help and not feel bad and/or guilty about it. I'll keep working to be stronger, but it's time I admit this may be as good as it gets.

Took our newest horse out ponying with my best horse. As long as I don't care how long it takes, and I have my chair, I'm good to go! Coaught both horses, saddled, Clue, tied Blondee on to the rear D riging and mounted my 16-1 hh beast all on my own! Rode about a mile ponying and then tied Blondee up to the trailer from Clue and rode the field by myself... most impressively, got OFF Clue's ginormous self on my own and untacked and turned the horses out. Gotta love ms, even the simplist things seem like monumental accomplishments!!

WOW, how sweet! Did you find my missing miles from my dead battery? LOL Thanks Tammy.
I had a great ride this afternoon with a high school friend (who's been in Nebraska longer than me but, thanks to FaceBook, we just figured it out in the last couple of years!), one of my 'new' neighbors that I've been finding near our acreage and a new riding friend I've heard lots about but never met. We rode all the way around Bluestem Lake since the water table is so low. Little bit of a hair raising moment(s) when my 19 yr old Clue wigged out on Julie, my HS friend who hadn't ridden since, when we came accross a guy training his hunting dog in a nearby feild! Julie stayed on though and Clue didn't even look at the guy when we went back by him. Thought I was gonna die again near the end, lol - Mary's who took me on my last 5 mile ride. Need to ride 5 miles more - this time was better!!

Rode with my daughter down to the rec area by our house, thinking we'd rack some more miles up there, only I didn't think it was as popular a hunting area as it apparently is. Not long after getting there it sonded like a war zone - so we left back down the road! Then road the road, saw our neighbor come home and worked with standing our horses.

What. a. night. Decided to go ride with a friend and brought my daughter now that she's showing more interest. Only, may trailer hitching jinx is still going strong and I hit it clean off the block the jack rests on. I did manage to lever the trailer up enough for Jayda to slide the block back under though and we caught Firecracker, the old mare, and my hubby's 7 yr old who's been just sitting around too much. Oh my, riding green horses stinks BAD when you're weak and your own balance is off some! lol We did it though, even got some decent circles in, walked the barrels twice and side passed.

The push is ON. I pretty much quit riding when hunting started around here and the weather started getting colder, but that is not going to be the case for December. I may be near the bottom of the placings, but I can almost taste the 200 miles I'm so near! Got out today and found out that the pony just plain and simply doesn't want to pony. Don't know yet how I'm going to get her cooperating when being led from a horse, or get my shorter Cherokee, that she can't run under like she does Clue, to quit picking on her - which ended in her squaring off and rearing and striking. grrr. Anyway, took the newest horse out ponying just to work on Cherokee and then rode a ways.

Looking forward to riding with you on Friday and putting some of those miles on your board.
I am on for tomorrow if you will have me,

Sorry Juanita, I've got my 2 yr old tomorrow... though that doesn't mean you can't still come hang out with us for a while and do Cody's first trail ride with us. ;-) Come on Friday and ride with Tammy, Diane, me and whoever else is coming to Wilderness Park!
I always did best in the last stretch when I ran track in school - helps when the finish line is almost tangible! So, today I went and did some ground work with my son's pony and caught Clue and tacked and mounted on my own. It took me longer than I'd hoped and Jayda was coming home on the bus shortly after I got on, so I convinced her to get Cherokee and ride bareback and we just played around in the field. One thing's for certain, I'm not to good a field writing. lol

Crazy. When I rode with Tammy Friday, I know my garmin and her phone showed different miles. Well, was going to clear my garmin, and THAT shows I rode 1.23 miles, even though connect read 1.19. not a big issue for me, but I'm definitely looking next time!!
Gorgeous 50 degree December day!! Our 2013 DD manager, Diane, came and picked me up and we headed to the rec area. Trimmed some trees and rode more of the rec area than I ever have and made it around the lake, thanks to the dry year! Diane's garmin read a little more than mine, but then she had to circle her pretty gaited horse a couple times so my old QH could keep up. Too bad we didn't have any 'red people' out there like last ride when Clue doubled his pace!

10 more miles to 200!! Went out on my own again - too nice a day at 50 degrees not too! Was just gonna ride the section at a nice, relaxing pace, but Cherokee was all over the place... guess it's been a while sine he had to go by himself. LOOKING, wanting to turn back the whole first mile, not wanting to travel straight, poop made me work for it today!! He'd go nice and straight, carrying himself for a few strides, but then he's get worried and fall apart again and I'd have to pick up contact again and straighten him out - yes, Cherokee, your head and tail should be in a straight line down the road, no, Cherokee, the culverts/shadow/shrub do not need to be gawked at.... lol
Great job Jamie!!! Almost to 200 miles! Merry Christmas! Marvel (Team 70)
Darn the cold and sick children! I haven't been able to go ride until today since my 2 yr old's been sick with something... and it would have to be COLD. Good thing my daughter and I started going North because we felt how hard the cold wind bit. Returning South wasn't to bad so I am afraid that if we would have started that way we would have had a long cold ride back into the wind.

YAY!! THANK YOU Diane, Carrie and my daughter Jayda for riding with me to cross the 200 mile mark! And, of course, thanks to my husband who took the 2 yr old to get our walmart stuff so I could go, and drove the trailer and tacked/untacked horses. 40* here in NE at the end of December is a very good day to ride and glad I could with such good company and horses. We spooked up a few deer and my husband's 24 yr old mare, Jayda's partner, went UNDER a bridge for te first time in her life... plus it was her rider's first time too. What a good ride to conclude my 200 mile drive (being I was on Clue too!). We'll see what weather's like tomorrow. :-)
