Team 27: Hetzel

154_54

I added a GPS to my Christmas list so Wolfie and I will be ready when 2012 rolls around.  I am a teacher at Omaha North High and I live on an acreage outside of Scribner.   Almost all of my riding takes place during the summer or on weekends, so don't look to us to set any records!  Wolfie is an OTTB.  Not sure what part of "run fast turn left" he couldn't figure out, but he seems to be very happy out trail riding and is content just "plodding" along in the back.  I have 2 other horses:  Red a retired fox-hunter and Joe another OTTB who does know how to "run fast and turn left"!  Looking forward to seeing how many miles we can log.

My first ride of 2012! 4 hrs 47 minutes. 12.37 miles. Broke a lot of my rules but what the heck. Needs to be above 40...check broke that one. Needs to be sunny...check broke that one too. NO wind...yep that one had to go. And did it all while road riding, which I HATE. Would have been happy to sit at home today but thanks TV for having the Distance Derby (seeing all those zeros behind my name IS motivation!)and my friend Lyanne who ALWAYS rides the road, so off we went. It was great and Wolfie was such a good boy. He does love to trot. Max speed was 13.0 mph at a trot.

What a great day for a ride...okay, the pesky wind was a bit much, but other than that a top day. With temps in the 50's and bright sun shine the wind didn't feel that bad. Here are the stats..... 10.78 miles, 3 hours and 34 minutes, 10.4 max speed, moving average 3.2 mph, average overall 3.0 mph. I am sooo loving this GPS thing...Tammy this Distance Derby IS the best thing since sliced bread!!

Finally got a ride in...it has been awhile. Sun was nice but the wind was COLD. Don't think it made it up to 40. Rode with my neighbor and his grandson on the roads around here. 6.98 miles 2 hours max. speed 12.8 mph. was at a trot, too muddy so didn't feel comfortable with anything more.

just noticed the lovely saddle pad you have in the pic, where did you get it, i would love to have one.

Yea got out and road today. It was windy but no matter didn't damper the day. Lyanne a riding friend came over and we rode to Dead Timber and back. Saw a HUGE herd of turkeys(20-30)....I know it should be a flock but there were too many for just a flock so call it a herd. The horses saw them and of course I was worried, I can only imagine what would happen if a herd of turkeys decided to attack. lol Lyanne said lets keep up with them...I said "are you crazy it won't be pretty if all (by now I am pretty sure there are at least 40) of them take off". Thankfully they decided to head the other way.
13.47 miles
max. 16.0 mph
average 3.3 mph
4 hours 17 minutes

Nice day.if the rain holds off am heading out again tomorrow.

Not sure if I reply to you here it will get to your account, so I will try posting here and I will send the information to you several other ways as well. I also need to figure out a way to "edit" my postings because I seem to have a lot of mistakes in my last one. rode NOT road, forgot quotes, skipped some punctuation. Thank goodness this has spell check or I would really be in trouble!.. I got the trail pad from the Paddock in Omaha. It was one they had to special order for me. I have had 3 and I love them. It is a dressage trail pad made by Pacific Rim International. The tag says PRI Continental Double Back Trail Pad for dressage saddles Double Back padding with fleece lining. Hope this helps.

Headed over to a friend's house (Bev)and rode around there. I am fast becoming a fan of road riding....never thought I would. But with the ever increasing price of gas I have been forced to try it and to my surprise, I am sold on it. Bev only lives 15 miles from me in one direction and Lyanne only 30 the other, that puts me in the middle. So we trade off as far as which place we head to. Today's stats

8.62 miles
13.1mph max speed
3.6mph moving average
2 hours and 40 minutes

Bev heads to my place tomorrow so will log some more then

Bev trailered over to my place and we rode the roads to Dead Timber. She had never been before and really enjoyed it. Here are the stats for today's ride. We covered about the same number of miles as when I rode with Lyanne but we (Bev and I ) did more trotting/cantering so time is less but moving average went up

12.56 miles (TOTAL 64.78)
3.6 moving average
15.3 mph max.
3 hours 36 minutes

Didn't see the dreaded herd of turkeys but did see a pretty red fox on our way in and out of the Park.

Heading to Lyanne's tomorrow so making the most of the weather and my time off from school.

A big thank-you to my neighbor for meeting me at Powderhorn (just 5 miles from my house) and riding with me so I could log my 100th mile. Good job Kristy!!!! wondering about your time did you shut off your GPS for the vet check?

Kristy said...

Time is wrong.........thanks Shannon. my GPS keeps track of moving time AND stopped time separately so I have to remember to add the 2 together and for this post I forgot to do that. Oops I went back and looked and the stopped time was 28 minutes. So the total time should have been 3 hours and 25 minutes. When I was all done I forgot to turn it off right away so I got a few extra minutes of saddle time.
SO I should have added that the time I posted was moving time.

Rode at 2 Rivers....... HOT, HOT, HOT! oh yeah and humid. Went out for 2 rides.......... good thing we did as there was a storm that rolled through around 4:00 a.m. so we pulled out Sunday morning. We (Donna, Sandi and I stayed overnight) were concerned about not being able to get out but we put 'em in 4 wheel drive (no horses in the trailers) and plowed through just fine. We had our own "obstacle" course as an archery club was setting up for a contest on Sunday so our horses had to walked under a white tent and by "tons" of plastic animals....lions and tiger and bears oh my!

Hot afternoon to ride, but I met Donna and Leon at Hormel Park around 12.30 and we headed out. All the trails are in the trees so we really stayed pretty cool. It wasn't till we finished (around 3:30) that we started to notice the heat, my truck said it was 91!! Yikes. One slight mishap.........there are several big cables that are NORMALLY semi buried but for whatever reason I didn't see this one that was elevated about 6 inches above the ground. The first 2 horses (okay 1 is a mule) made it over fine but Wolfie got his left hind leg "hung up" on it and scraped about 4 inches of skin off. I am pretty sure it upset me more than it did him. After the ride, I washed it off and sprayed some vetrincyin (sp?) on it.
Drat, so close, but didn't break 200 today. Next ride for sure

Last night was a nice evening for a ride. Hauled over to my friend Lyanne's house and we rode the gravel roads around her house. Wolfie's cable injury seems to be healing nicely but there seems to be more swelling than I would like. Thought getting him out and some movement might help. Unfortunately, I think Lyanne's horse might have caught the same right rear when she was riding behind us and he took several steps without putting any weight on it. Today he is not him self and the leg is still swollen so I called the vet and have take a look at it. He isn't lame on it but something is going on

Kristy said...

Vet looked at Wolfie's leg Friday, and yes, it is swollen, but no, he isn't lame on it..........Pain-killer IV (bute?) and 2 long-lasting antibiotic shots in his butt cheeks. I am suppose to do cold water "therapy" twice a day, spray some vitricyin on it and paste bute twice a day for a week. Vet said it would be okay to ride just not to do a lot of cantering etc. So today, since it looked MUCH better, (hardly any swelling) I loaded him up and met Bev at Hormel Park. We took it easy and only trotted once or twice. Hormel is the best place to go for a short ride on hot days because it is all in the trees and sandy, so even with the rain this morning it was great footing. Just watch out for those nasty cables!

Another hot day, but I loaded Wolfie and pulled into my friends house around 8:30 this morning. She loaded her mare and off we went. Ride today was at Mike Anderson's by Blair. Wolfie certainly earned his keep today. Great ride but it is really challenging for the rider and a work out for the horse. It is a great ride and you really feel like you have accomplished something after it is all said and done. Horse went over backwards with rider before ride even started, horse(different horse) and rider went off of one of the bridges (the one without rails) and another horse bucked rider off after it(the horse) was stung by something. Some scrapes but everyone came out fine and all finished the ride one way or another. Way too much excitement for me, but I keep going back, every time I am invited.....it is a fantastic ride.....tons of fun. Wolfie might not entirely agree with me and he might have his own story to tell, but we'll never know!

Big THANK-YOU to my friend Lyanne. It was raining this morning but she still headed down my way to put the first ride in on my new horse. No way was I going to get on him, unless it was under controlled conditions (round pen, arena etc.) Not Lyanne.....first ride=first trail ride!! He was a rock star...mostly thanks to Lyanne. She is a good rider and I think that made all the difference. Leo (for now, but the name might change) handled bug spray, saddling, bridling, and he lead the whole time. Curious but not at all crazy. Most of the time he walked out on a loose rein. We went through bean fields, through a tall, dry corn field (we got lost, seemed like the best option), pastures. Saw turkeys, cows in a distance and trucks that went by on the road (we were close but not on it). Everything was a non-issue. Rode under trees and weeds smacked him but he didn't even care. He put his nose down and even found holes and uneven ground that he carefully picked his way around. Can't say enough about his first ride. Since Lyanne's horse Misty is getting some R&R we plan to ride together next weekend. We are going to load both ponies in my trailer and take him to Powderhorn and see what he thinks of the river IF it doesn't rain and we can still ride there.

Back to the river today with New Horse, Lyanne, Wolfie and me! Had a bit of a trailering issue. We put new horse in first and he pretty much freaked out until we got Wolfie in there with him. For the ride home we put Wolfie in first and it worked SO much better. He took to water like "a duck". Wolfie (who always goes into water, unless he is first) had to be convinced to lead (enter the crop!) After a few well place smacks he was ready to splash around. We went about 3 miles up and down the river and then into Dead Timber and then back to Powderhorn. Fun Fun Fun The new horse is really brave and bold. He pretty much "plows" through or over everything.

Nice easy ride today at Hormel Park with Lindsey and her mom. I passed the 400 mile mark!! only 100 left to my goal of 500. Wolfie seemed a bit tired today, guess all that trudging through the sand and water yesterday wore him out. Lindsey said she would be interested in going to the river with us next Sunday so he better rest up this week.

Another nice easy ride at Hormel Park today. What a nice place to ride.......close to home, with about 6 miles of trails, all of which are in the trees. Donna's wrist is no longer keeping her off a horse so we had a good time "catching up" Our average mph is slow as we did a lot of talking!!!

Scary day!! Everything started out great, clouds started to clear out, nice breeze..4 of us going to meet at Powderhorn. We just got to the river and had started downstream when my "new horse" Trooper (who Lyanne was riding) started bucking........no idea why but Lyanne came off and Trooper decided to head out of the river and back into the woods. Lindsey got off and picked up Lyanne's cap and saddle bag that had fallen off and were heading down river. I stayed by Lyanne to make sure she was okay. She had the breath knocked out of her and her back hurt. Lindsey headed back to see if she could find Trooper. I stayed with Lyanne until she was able to stand and walk out of the river. She said she was going to walk back so Donna and I headed back to the trailers to see how Lindsey was doing with finding the horse. He had made it back to the trailers but didn't even slow down and headed to the highway. A lady stopped and said her husband had "chased him down" and was riding him back! Gutsy guy....... Once we had that under control Lindsey headed back out to Lyanne. Lyanne was hurting too bad to get back up on Lindsey's horse so walked back to the trailers with Lindsey. Lyanne called her husband to come and get her. Lindsey and I waited until her husband arrived and then Lindsey helped me load Trooper which by now had calmed down. WAY TOO MUCH EXCITEMENT. Lyanne said she heard air boats when she walked out, so all of us could have ended up in the drink so to speak had the boat come up our way. Trooper had the longest "ride" and the fastest, too bad he wasn't wearing the GPS. So glad Lindsey was there.......very cool head in a crisis.

Wow, what a great trip to Kansas! Went to Clinton Lake (Rockhaven Horse camp) The trails there are great fun! Was a bit worried since I don't have shoes on Wolfie but the worry was for nothing. He "trucked" up and down all the trails like a veteran. Too tired to write more. But sure would recommend this as a place to ride.

Rode at Ponca again..........the hills were a bit muddy so Wolfie did a bit of sliding but he doesn't seem to mind "scooting" around a bit. Wolfie has quite a winter coat already and I was surprised that he got a bit sweaty after the short ride. Might meet Donna and head to Lake C tomorrow.

Only 20 more miles and I am done for the year.....first my goal was 1 mile a day (365 total) but when I hit 365 there were lots of ride days left so I decided to go for 500 (a nice round number that I just pulled out of thin air) More than I ever thought I could ever accomplish. I will be happy with my 500 no matter where I finish in the Derby.

Congrats on all your miles Kristy!! Nice that you exceeded your first goal and are closing in on 500 miles for the year! I am happy I got to share some of those miles with you & Wolfie!

A bit of a wind today but got out and rode anyway. Donna had spotted a flyer at the bar in Nickerson when she was out to supper and called and wanted to know if I would do the ride with her. It was from Nickerson to Winslow and back to Nickerson. There would be chili when we got to Winslow and a potluck when we got back to Nickerson. Couldn't stay for the potluck but we did the ride. We dressed warmly, the sun was shinning and our two horses behaved themselves so all was good........the chili was great!!

Made it!!! Rode at Mike's today.....fitting place to make it past 500. Saw some Derby riders there and horsetalers also. Nice to put faces/horses with names. Wolfie and I brought up the rear for most of the ride. He enjoys it in the back and I can also let him nibble whenever he wants without people behind us getting annoyed. Had a great selection of snacks afterwards. Great day all the way around.

Trooper has a new home! Went to 2 rivers today with Bev and I took Wolfie and Trooper. Helen Smith met us there and rode Trooper. They got along well together so he went home in her trailer. I don't think Wolfie or Red will miss him one bit but I was rather sad to see him leave. He would have been a perfect horse for me but he just would not play nice with Red and Wolfie....bite and kick marks all over them when they were together so he had to go.

Windy, windy, windy! But wind or no wind I got out and rode today. Hauled over to Bev's and Donna met us there and we rode the roads and fields around her house. Wolfie was a "turd"........was not having any part of just walking....wanted to trot, trot, trot! Then I just about went over his head when he STOPPED dead in his tracks. All because of a corn stalk that was making some weird noise in the wind. Geez, you would think he had never seen a corn stalk. Hello!.... they are all around him at home because he is running in some stalks right now. But we did cover some ground and got a max of 16 mph +

Great ride today! Went to Camp Moses. Hadn't been for a L-O-N-G time and I wanted to see what it looked like with all the trail changes. They took out a lot of cedar trees so everything looks different, so much so that we managed to get sort of, kind of, lost. Not really, but we did have to take several different trails (or make one of our own) until we found an area that looked familiar. Beautiful day. Weather was perfect. And I now have a new MAX 17.4 mph. Great way to start the month of December. A nice birthday present to myself....the big 60 tomorrow! Can't think of a better way to spend it than riding with friends.
