Team 59: Alexander

Dawn CGW crop 2011

I'm Tammy Alexander from Wakefield, Nebraska. My two main horses for the derby are Apache (11 yo Paint) and Dawn (13 yo Paint) and I hope to be putting some miles on Barney the Mule (4 yo) this year. I love trail riding and camping with friends. I have never been good about keeping track of how much I ride so I am hoping that the Distance Derby will encourage me to do that. Plus maybe make me learn to use that dang GPS I own.

I have owned at least one horse since I was five. Like so many others on the Derby horses are my recreation & my love. I really enjoyed reading every ones bios! I have no chance of winning but it will be fun to hear the stories and it would be really neat to meet some new horse lovers out on the trails!!

Well, it was not pretty but I got a ride in today! I rode Dawn, my 13 year old mare. Those of you have that have ridden with me know that Dawn is usually my "rock star". Well who the heck was this tail cranked, snorting and spinning fool I was on today??? Dang, she was a bit##! Plus about 3/4 of the way through the ride I notice my dogs head to the small run off "ditch". I don't think much about it until I see Zip walking on the ice on the pond...then I see Tipper the saint head out on the ice. Before I can yell I hear a "crack" and see Tipper's rear end break through the ice. In true saint bernard fashion she never panics, just keeps trying and finally gets to the shore. She gets out & takes off in her funny "puppy run". In the mean time, back on the ice....I see Zip the English Shepherd go back on the ice and sure enough, she breaks through too. However Zip does NOT remain calm. Her frantic splashing set off the hell-bit## Dawn and she decides that she needs to get away from that animal...far away. Dawn & I have a "discussion" that dog is "our" dog and we need to go back. So I get Dawn turned around, get off and go get Zip out of the pond....poor Zip, she was swimming circles and I could not get her listen to me.

Both dogs are fine, I am fine and it really was a good ride. The total of 3.23 miles over 58 moving minutes & with a max speed of 16.4mph.

Well tonight was a MUCH better ride, lol! Dawn & I had re-ride from last night and it was darn near perfect. I was proactive and if she started to get antsy I put her to work, for her part Dawn came back to me pretty quickly. Our gallop was a nice level gallop, both water bottles stayed put :). The GPS batteries died before the end of the ride.

GREAT RIDE TONIGHT! On Apache, I know now why I love the bugger. It reminded me what I love about riding, the easy freedom of being out with my horse & my dogs.

The theme of tonight's ride was "let the big dog's run"! I decided I needed to have a good ride on Dawn to cancel out Monday night's ride. My thought was to give Dawn some rein tonight and let her work some of that pent up energy out. We had a nice long gallop to start the ride and I kept her going for a little while after she was ready to slow down. Zip stayed at home tonight (her choice) but Tipper kept up easily. Walked for a little then moved into a lope again asked for a little more speed. She had a couple gears left but I hate to ask for much more in the bean field. Tipper saw the 3 deer that have been lurking around for the last 3 rides and gave chase for a little while. But I called her and she gave up the chase and came right back. Had a nice, slow, head down walk from Dawn. Just what the doctor ordered. My nice sane mare is back, yay!

Had to sneak a ride tonight, my stress level was high from work. Chose Apache because he can always make me smile. And tonight was no exception, he was a good boy.

Hey Tammy
I rode over at Powderhorn the other week with Ward and I mentioned that there would be a ride May 16th. He said he needed to do a bit of work on it before then but I think he is planning on having it "good to go". I will be there as well, but do not want to lead, I would feel like I was stepping on Ward's toes. I think he takes great pride in having the ride there and leading it so I think it is important that he be the "go to guy" Besides Wolfie is a big pansy ass and I'm pretty sure he would make a TERRIBLE leader!! I would probably need spurs, a crop and who knows what else, to get him to go. It would be ugly for sure. lol
I am riding there tomorrow with Lyanne and I will talk to Ward and let you know what he thinks as far as being ready by that date.

PRR North ride at Willow Creek. Marvel & I went early and got 3 miles in. BEAUTIFUL RIDE! We had 7 riders plus we say Kristi (Team 27) & her friends at the horse campground. They had gotten back from their ride to late to join up with us.

We saw a variety of wildlife (the good kind). Two turtles, 4 baby raccoons, many frogs, many rabbits & one very unhappy beaver that scared the heck out of Apache with a tail slap & dive. After that he kept looking for more of them, ha! Also found a sandy spot and were able to get the horses down to the lake. I have not heard that much snorting from a group of horses in a LONG time. It was very windy and the waves rolling in and lapping at the shore make the horses very uneasy.

I am leaving Sunday with fellow Derby rider Sue Maiwald (Team 73) and we are taking our "dream vacation" together! How cool is that? We have both had a South Dakota trip on our bucket lists and this year we are doing it! We will meet up with Peggy Ann of Montana Spots (Team 60) on Tuesday. Again, I am so excited and it will be so fun to meet Peggy Ann.

I am looking forward to lots of miles, lots of fun & lots of stories to tell when we get back!

Until we meet again, Happy Trails Derby Riders!

Hi Tammy

I talked to Ward and he said the state has been back to Powderhorn and that they made several nice trails. Plus he is "searching" for a spot to cross the river from Powderhorn over into Dead Timber. Several of his "old" trails are a bit overgrown and he is going to go and work on them a bit. However, he is was concerned that with the temps climbing back up next week that the ride might be cancelled.

Do you have his email? If not, let me know and I will give it to you and "talk" to him.

Got to ride in the Wayne Chicken parade with the RCR crew! Nice gals, they wanted me to carry the American flag but I wanted to throw candy :). I had TWO bags of mixed candy and we got most of it "tossed". Apache is such a goof, I think he enjoyed it as much as I did. Got to the fairgrounds early and rode around there. The Shriner White Horse Patrol was there! They are so fun to watch! Rode from the fairgrounds to the join the parade down town. Had a GREAT time but it was plenty warm when we got back to trailers.

I had a stressful & long day at work on Wednesday so didn't get up to TC until 6:20. Got the group to ride off without me and spent a relaxing 2 hours making camp for Dawn, the dogs & I. Had a nice belated B-Day party for Lisa, stayed up way to late and then had two awesome rides on Thursday & Friday! For the Friday ride Brenda took us on the 3-B's ride, what a hoot! I hope we can get a ride squeezed in sometime, let me know.

Congratulations on passing 300 miles this week! I'm happy I was there to share the moment with you! Thanks for being there with me today to share and help me pass the 200 mile mark! It took five months for me to reach the first 100 miles and two and a half months (without riding for one of those months) to reach the second hundred miles. Shows what we can do when we set our minds to it!

Here's to the next four and a half months of an awesome year! Let's see what else we can accomplish together!!!!!!

So envious that you got another ride in at Turkey Creek. :--)) Had a chance to ride yesterday (only had a half day of school) but man was it windy! Fighting the wind was a "downer" but still good to get out so shouldn't complain. I have ridden more this year than any other, so the Derby really was a motivator. Glad I did it, but probably won't try it again. I've really let too much around here "slide" so need to give my place some much needed attention. I am sure Wolfie will be glad to take it a bit easier next year. I hope our paths cross so we can ride together again and hopefully at Turkey Creek
