Team 1: Vasa
I’m Tammy Vasa from Nebraska. Although I’ve dabbled in CTR and have Limited Distance on my bucket list, I am primarily a pleasure rider. For years, I have tracked time and distance for my own goals and for our state’s Trail Time program. I am also a member of the AQHA ride program. I have found that by doing this, it motivates me to ride more. When I was young, I always dreamed of having horses. Now that I have them, it is important to me that I use them. I strive to be a better rider and have fit and healthy horses. That can’t happen looking at them in the pasture.
Windy will be my primary mount. She is my home-grown quarter horse mare, turning ten in 2012. She is my {heart} horse and chronicled on my blog as My Dream Horse. Far from perfect, we are a perfect match. Having lost her mother unexpectedly this year put us in the rare position of buying another horse for my husband. He rides about 90% less than I do, so I am tasked now with putting time on his soon to be 5-year-old quarter horse mare, Fancy. And there are three other horses, Blue, Butter and Baby that can use a few miles under their girth strap, as well.
Although activity from me will wane for a few months due to winter in Nebraska, this will be fun! I look forward to the challenge.
You can find stories of my horses and my rides at my blog, Horsetrailriders.com. I am looking forward to this challenge and hope there are more than a few of you coming along for the ride.

9:01 miles on Windy in 2.0 hours
2:03 miles on Fancy in .5 hours

11:04 Miles total
Didn't break any speed records. It was 31* and the wind was awful. Had an 8 miles goal in mind and exceeded it and figured since I was dressed like the rollee pollee tire guy, I may as well ride another one. Nothing of interest to see. A farmer tried to approach Ritz and I had to tell him "don't touch the dog!" It gets their attention when I say it that way and then I explain that he is very protective and its best to just let him go on by. Good boy, Ritz.
I put 2.3 miles on Butter Butt tonight. I was burning daylight fast; just not enough time after work but at 56 degrees, it was worth the effort. We just rode in the alfalfa field. She gave me a little attitude but we worked thru it.
1/5/2011 - .68 on Windy team sorting.
1/6/2011 - 14.4 on Fancy. Rode the Oak Creek Trail
It was a trifecta today. Planned to do all the miles on Windy but she was a bit sluggish going thru the fields and when we hit the gravel road at the next mile, she felt a little off. She had a little blood at the coronary band; wonder if she didn't have an abscess blow :/ I took her back home and pulled out the fat horses...
Blue & Butter are so buddy sour so decided maybe if they went together, things would be better. First ponied Butter from Blue. What a difference in Blue's attitude. He was a rock star. Then ponied Blue from Butter. Won't give her the rock star award but things were better. Then we got close to the barn and she wasn't going to give me an extra tenth of a mile. No sireeee. So instead, I made her give me a 1/2 miles at a trot in the arena. Maybe next time that 1/2 won't come so hard. :)
The sun didn't stay with me long; I think it was in the low 40's, but no wind. Rode in fleece breeches, goretex and a down vest and as always, my neck warmer from Team Misfit. :)

Wasn't sure riding was in the cards today. Decided if it happens, its just what I need; and if it doesn't, don't sweat it. And even when I was walking to the barn, I was still waffling about riding or not. But the little voice warned me that we haven't even THOUGHT about February yet; so ride while I can. Fancy was my choice today.
We didn't go too far out of her comfort zone; rode the alfalfa field mostly and around the west side of the place. We finally had some good lopes in the arena, too. She just gets better and better every ride. Oh, and we had a really well executed gate opening & closing, too. Need to work on the sidepass but she did it all without needing that gear. And I wasn't even wearing spurs.

Finally! Garmin came thru for me! One ride on Windy broken down by the fields I was riding in.
The first field - the faster loop:
Distance: 2.44 mi
Time: 16:03
Avg Speed: 9.1 mph
The second field, but not far behind:
Distance: 1.62 mi
Time: 15:56
Avg Speed: 6.1 mph
Total 4.06 miles in 32 minutes. Burning daylight!
What an awesome day - of course it would have been even better if I didn't have to work, but made the most of what was left of it. Windy and I went and lapped the bean fields again.

We took it nice and slow today. I thought my hip/back would hurt worse than it did, but actually, it was my head that still hurts. Trotting was not an option.
I learned today what a great product that garmin makes. last week i realized that i lost satellite coverage once in awhile in the arena unless i carried it in my hand, well i started tying it to the outside of my coat today. i didn't tie it very good and it hit the dirt, horse didn't step on it and it still runs, you gotta love at company.
When John came in and said it wasn't too bad out, I couldn't take it any longer. Back in the saddle again. Rode for time, not distance, didn't want to push it, but had a good ride on both the mares.

for those that do not ride everyday, you still love horses, some of you have full time jobs, and no matter what your skill level as long as you ride with folks that are not crazy and will not hurt you and stay in your skill level, you are a horse lover and rider, that said i applaud you.
Been gone too long! And sundown came too quickly. But managed to steal a few miles on Windy. Felt great! Even loped a spell.

Planned to take the afternoon off and ride. But one thing at work prevented it; duty called. So had to settle for a shorter ride after work tonight. The sun went down on us once again. The days are not getting longer fast enough!
Well i would follow my tracks to find the phone except i only know how to do one thing with the darn thing. i turn it on and hit page twice. The page shows up with how many miles, max speed, elevation etc. it is the extent of my knowledge on how to use my really expensive gps. i may see if i can figure it out tomorrow, however since you gave me the idea.
Just remember, Juanita - when you started this, you worried about the GPS! You can do it!!
Here is my ride from last night on Windy. We were gone pretty late last night so I didn't have time to post or update leaderboard.

My goal today was to break the 100 mile club and I did. The whole herd got into the game today. I blogged about it on http://www.horsetrailriders.com/ . It was a fun day but I really don't like to ride that much by myself. Would have been much more fun with one of you.

Slow ride in the field tonight. For some reason it sure was noisy out. Loud trucks, jake brakes, tractors hauling fencing panels, John putting in a bale. You'd think we lived in the city! Fancy took it in stride; I was annoyed. I wanted peace & quiet. :)

No takers to ride with me today and I just didn't want to go out alone again (naturally...) Rode Fancy in the round pen because it was pretty much snow covered and could stay out of the mud. Do you know how many times you have to go around to get a mile? I don't either, but A LOT!

Today John and I took the mares over to Mary and Dwight's for a nice ride. Took the roads and then dropped down into a field and followed the Wahoo Creek for a ways. Then back onto the roads and back into the fields to follow another creek. Lots of trotting and cantering. A good ride.
Yeah, it's not easy to get miles riding round and round in the pastures, either. I keep checking my GPS and shaking it, thinking surely it's not working right. lol

I sat around long enough. It was dusk; the wind finally died down a bit. Anxious to see how Blue responded since his chiro appointment so took him into the arena for a bit. He seems to have loosened up some; didn't crossfire when I asked for a lope but didn't hold him in it either because the ground was pretty soft. Seemed a little off on the front left but could be just from trimming. Vet had also said that shoulder was pretty tight.

My brother and niece came out today with hopes of riding. By the time he got here, tornadic-like winds were blowing and it was down right miserable. But we did it, by golly. Never quite got 2 miles. He rode Blue, my niece on Windy, I took Fancy, John on Baby and my son even rode his horse, Butter. He and I switched about halfway into the ride; his first time on Fancy. He said he likes his fat pony better. ;)

Did you all notice Garmin no longer provides Avg Moving Speed on Garmin Connect? If you are so inclined, please complain. Average speed is unimportant to me, especially when on a group ride. I want to know "moving speed". I can see it on my unit, but still.....

Rode for time, not miles tonight. When I got home, it was still 70 degrees and there was not so much of a breeze. We rode off on a loose rein and stayed that way the entire loop. It was just so nice to soak it all in without rushing to beat sunset.

What a beautiful night. I put a hoodie on over my tee shirt but regretted it the first mile. Dare I say it was almost humid! We did our fair share of walk, trot, lope; worked on collection which is not Windy's favorite thing but had the Myler shank in tonight and she works better with collection off that bit. It doesn't take much and knowing I am using it make me lighter with her, too. It really was a nice ride.

The Big Fat Lying Weatherman almost had his way with us. No rain in the forecast, then 10%, then 50%, then it poured. Gauging by what was in the feed pans, close to 2" of rain. Had hoped to meet Leigh on Sat AM, but we waited it out hoping the trails would dry out. Went out in the PM and stayed on the prairie and the road; later in the day the trails in the woods were better. The wind was bitter, bitter cold and it got pretty chilly overnight. The wind changed to the south today and it was much nicer.
My youngest son actually rode with us this weekend and we camped with the Musils.

The weather grounded us on Friday but we set out for Bader Park on Saturday for our annual May Day ride - a bit early due once again to graduations in the group. Saturday was a picture perfect day - made up for last years' tornadic weekend at Bader and for stormy weather on Friday. Did a lot of river riding and bushwacking.
Today was foggy and misty in the morning; geared up with coats, gloves and earbands and did a couple of loops on the trails picking up the pace a bit. Six out of eight of the riders are Distance Derby riders - we did remind Team Anderson to turn on her GPS :)

I hate when Garmin steals miles on me. I intentionally go over a particular goal by usually .10th of a mile. I thought I had 6.1; uploaded, Garmin says 5.99. Sigh...

Just around home. Good to be getting some horse time again. Just shy of my 400 miles.
Was tonight just beautiful or what! No wind. Saw a big doe (Ritz chased her), saw two bunnies (Ritz chased one), he also chased a cat and some other unknown animals that I couldn't see. He must have had 2 more miles on Windy and me. Even though I get bored riding alone, tonight was one of those nights it didn't bother me. Rehashed the weekend, unwind from work; no one was home so no guilt about being out... Perfect.

The weather gave us all sorts of surprises. I ran the heat strip in my trailer on Thurs night, rode Willow Creek with a fleece coat and earband on Friday. At the ranch up north on Friday night, I turned on the propane heater to take the chill out but when we finished our morning ride on Saturday, the humidity had rolled in and we were sweating like pigs. No way were we saddling for a later ride! Sunday was one of those picture perfect days. Blue skies, slight breeze and a ride to the Niobrara River. And today was sunny and cool; jacket weather, but a beautiful ride day. Just short of 40 miles for the weekend. I'm tired, but a good tired.

Friday
10.37 miles. Julie B came out and rode my Fancy while I rode Windy. Took the same loop as the night before only in reverse. Moving time slowed down to 4.0 mph and I don't think we quit talking the entire 2.5 hours. Good to catch up.
Sunday
5.59 miles. OMG, I thought I would beat the heat by being saddled before 8:00 AM. No such luck. The humidity was so think my jeans were sticking before I got out of the drive. Only 4.1 moving average; did not want to push her. Made it a short ride.
Monday
4.55 miles. Just plain racing daylight. Planned to get a longer ride in but wanted to mow first. Had a breakdown with the mower and figured it would be frowned upon if I didn't finish my job after he fixed the mower. So a short but fast ride. 5.5 mph moving average.
Beastly hot and humid this weekend. Only rides I could muster were late in the evening or early in the morning.
Friday, June 29

1.02 Miles in the arena on Fancy (bareback!)
Saturday, June 30
10.22 Miles on the road with Windy. Our average moving speed was 3.6 mph. We were on the road about 8:00 AM and the humidity was already present and no wind to help out. She didn't show any discomfort so we just kept going at a slow pace. Got me some Trail Time hours going that speed!
Sunday, July 1
5.28 miles on Windy. Knew I didn't have a lot of time but it was less humid this morning and thought I could get a few miles in before I had to be someplace. Windy caught me by surprise when she spooked BIG TIME at a running pivot.
It was my goal to hit 600 miles before end of June. Getting rained out Father's day and then these awful temperatures kept me from reaching that goal. There will be better days.
Friday, June 6: 4.99 Miles / Funeral in York
Saturday, June 7: 5:51 Miles / Camp Moses

I thought I would get the leaderboard updated before I leave tomorrow but just plain ran out of time. There wasn't much activity so I doubt it will hurt anyone too badly. Due to a horse vacation I will not be able to update my miles as regularly as normal. Don't know if I'll have Internet coverage or not. Have a safe week everyone attempts are getting torturous.
We're home! Vacation was fabulous & logged 80.99 Derby miles, crossing past the 700 mile marker!

Lots of riding going on this weekend. We were really blessed with the weather after such a miserable last month. Scared to look at what next week has in store.

Another great week of riding. It was especially nice to get together with so many Distance Derby Riders at Rock Creek this past weekend. I crossed the 800 mile marker late yesterday afternoon with several of the Derby Riders and didn't even realize it until I just tallied up my stats. Very cool! Thanks, girls, for sharing that new milestone with me.

Loving this fall weather.
Windy thru a shoe so it was Fancy & Blue this weekend. Blue really wasn't too keen on leaving the girls but he played nice. The leaves are turning and it has been just beautiful to be out riding in this fall weather.

Well.... we went to Indian Cave to do our first CTR in two years. Windy should have been in primo shape for it. Then it rained. Then she lost her head. Then her heart got an extra beat. I think this is a new record for the longest drive for the shortest ride... I blogged about it on my website if you are so inclined...

I have put time on all my horses when riding the Distance Derby, but Windy obviously the most. Today she has 902 miles on her in this little race. I wish I would have thought to check "per horse" before and tried to get a 1,000 on Windy alone. I don't think there is enough good days left in the year to hit that goal - especially with the darkest days yet ahead - but it has sure been a fun ride getting this close!

The last couple times I rode Windy, she had a dry cough. No runny nose or eyes and it wasn't constant. I really think it is due to dust but decided to give her a week off so Fancy got some ride time. Good time today with the Horsetales groups and a few other Distance Derby riders.

The last rides of 2012. Colder than ever! 16 - 22 degrees on average. Mornings in single digits.
It was a good year and I had some great rides. Made new friends along the way. My horse carried me in 7 states this year and willing drops her head for the halter to go another mile. I think I accomplished what I set out to do. Ride often, Ride fast and Have Fun!
