Team 73: Maiwald

Hi All.  I'm from Missouri Valley, Iowa and live in the beautiful Loess Hills.  Horses have been a major part of my life Forever! My go to horse is a Black and White Tennesee Walking Horse, Rocks Strollin Jim AKA Domino! We've been a team for almost 9 years now and I think he is 17 years old this year. The other horse I'll be riding is my 3/4 Arab/Paint cross that I've raised.  He is the last baby I'll ever have and the blood of my all time favorite horses over the last 30+ years pulses through his veins.  He's tall and pretty and full of personality - my dream horse 20 years ago!  I love to trail ride and camp with friends and competitive trail riding! Happy Trails!

I enjoyed getting out and riding yesterday! Was a little further than I planned or was ready for! My poor dog is lame today, so may have to start making her stay home. She's my only riding partner, but she was lagging behind yesterday and didn't go with me at all when I saddled up the second horse. Plan to try and find the time again today and add a few more miles to this.

Sunday afternoon ride, second one of the Derby for me! None of the team, Domino my horse, Patty my dog, or myself were quite as enthusiastic today. This is an aging team to say the least. The dog is 3 legged lame, but refused to stay home. The horse felt a little stiff and was happy to do an easy walk. My knees were killing me as well as my back! Enjoyed the sunshine, no wind and got off the roads today and rode to my favorite ponds, surprised they had a thin layer of ice. Its been so warm. 3.8 miles logged today on horseback.

Rode 6 miles today. Intended on 4, but warmed up after I went down to the bottom of hills. Tried to stay in the cover out of the wind. The temp said 45 but didn't feel quite that good. Trying to upload to Garmin.... not doing the upload!

Rode both of the horses, only 5 miles between the two. The weather was warm 50+, windy, but really nice. Having some major pain issues in my right foot. There is a nerve that is raw and I am very careful when I get off not to touch the ground with that foot! I think if I wasn't having pain issues I would have gone further, but just enjoyed the ambling pace today.

Finally got to ride again this morning. It was beautiful, sunny and slight breeze. Grabbed Mr. D and we rode the big section which is actually 2 sections. 8.1 miles about 2 hours. Big stress reliever. Wish I could have been riding some awesome trails someplace with some friends, but today this will have to do!

taking advantage of daylight savings time and wonderful weather for a ride after work tonight. 65 degrees, in a sweatshirt. 3.77 miles this evening, seeing deer, turkey and lots of honking geese. Top ten night all around!

trailridingwoman said...

Another beautiful, shirt sleeve, no wind evening!! Riding my fav Mr D. Lots of Turkey and deer. 4.17 miles in 1 hour. 1 big spook (he rarely spooks) and i Almost checked out the ground, but not tonight!

trailridingwoman said...

Great day but really windy!!! I could barely keep my helmet on! 4.12 miles riding out back in the timber and corn fields. Lots of Turkeys and a SNAKE! Ack. It was coiled and making scary noises that scared me - Must have been one of those big bull snake. I had stopped to let domino enjoy some grass as we stepped off to my left was a loud commotion and big open mouth. Glad he didn't spook and dump me on the stupid snakes. Hate em!

trailridingwoman said...

My post seems to have disappeared. I'll try it again. 6.12 miles through the timber from pond to pond to pond on Mr. D.Got him stuck in a brush pile and he just stood there until I got him unstuck. He's such a good horse I've known others that would have had a pretty traumatic accident with that... I'm blessed to have such a wonderful trail companion!

trailridingwoman said...

4.45 Miles in just over an hour. Think the wind pushed us in. Scared up at least 25 deer and that many turkeys. They are out to get me!

trailridingwoman said...

Beautiful evening, got home late went for a short ride around here! 3.45 miles in 47 minutes.

trailridingwoman said...

7 miles in 1:43 riding the roads due to heavy rains. Had the utlimate obstacle = deer jumped out at us as well as 3 turkeys trying to take flight just missing my head. I jumped - Domino just a solid good ole boy, barely missed a step. Love this horse.

5.30 miles tonight - Great night to ride, slight breeze, cool and beautiful sunshine. Thearapy to my heart and soul! 9 years ago my brother died from brain cancer. Today my mother's cancer is stealing her life away. Doctors have called and it is time for hospice or a nursing home. Yep I needed tonights ride for some peace and time to think about what is yet to come. I hate cancer!

9.01 miles at Turkey Creek this past weekend. Rode Brenda's Twister for 6 miles and Mr D for the last 3 in a moonlight light ride! Was Awesome.

trailridingwoman said...

5 miles tonight on a great evening ride. Cool, no breeze, no bugs - just a wonderful evening with Mr D all around!!!

trailridingwoman said...

clocked in another 5 miles this afternoon riding Mr D. rode in boots, trying to decide if I want to shoe for the Black Hills or ride in boots. Decisions, decisions, decisions....

Tammy Vasa said...

If you are staying at French Creek or riding those trails, there are a lot of water crossings. When in WY last year, I lost my boot at the first water/bog crossing. For S Dakota, me personally, I would not consider riding it without shoes.

trailridingwoman said...

3.69 miles tonight. Great evening, cool breeze and no bugs. One big spook but I stayed on. Fields are all plowed now, its hard to find a spot without gravel to get some miles in.
Thanks Tammy, I'll probably break down and get some shoes for the trip. don't want to get there and have a lame horse. That would be no fun at all!

6.22 miles at Branched Oak today riding with Brenda Messeick. She rode Bubba and he did great. Can see good improvement in his way of going, nice canter transitions, he left the bit alone and rode pretty quiet. Mr D was awesome of course as he most generally is.

Anonymous said...

1.75 Miles tonight on Bubba. First ride since he came back from Brenda's. Much improvement, smooth transitions, much more responsive and no bit chewing or tantrum tonight!! Turkey creek this weekend. manners are not his best point when he is nervous.

trailridingwoman said...

16 miles at Turkey Creek this weekend in a quick overnight camping trip. Bubba was awesome, very well behaved and no melt downs under saddle. Still a little nervous on the ground if Domino moves a little out of his site. Marianne was up from Florence Kansas and loved riding Bubba and how sensitive he is. Hot and humid, wish we could have stayed two nights, but one is better than none!

Anonymous said...

2 miles on Bubba today, riding away from home calmly and quietly. Walked, trotted, extended trot, willingly! Boot camp was good for Bubba and building confidence for me!

4.45 miles today June 3, 2012. Colton was here rode Domino and I rode Bubba. We had a great ride. I had booted them both because they seemed tender from the trim the other night. Brought them home and gave baths - humans got a little wet too.

Unknown said...

6/4/12 add another 4.25 miles tonight. Really need to get some mileage and conditioning in before we go to the Black Hills. Yikes its just over 2 weeks away!

Unknown said...

6/7/12 3.94 miles tonight riding at home down the roads with Colton. We switched horses and Colton practiced side passing and manuvering around some obstacles on Bubba. Great Evening!

Unknown said...

6/10/12 lets add another 6.26 miles to the total! boring road ride, but nice day. Can't wait to get to Ft Robinson and ride there next week and then on to the Black Hills!

Unknown said...

6/11/12 3.75 miles - beautiful evening - cool breeze!

Totaly mileage for the week 55.36 June 17-24,
The riding at Fort Rob and the Black hills was quite an experience! The panoramic views were awesome. I could not believe that the buttes in the distance I was looking up at, I would soon be looking over! Sometimes hard to do when you are afraid of heights! With no cell or internet service and then my computer crashed, its been a challenge to record anything. I wanted to record daily our rides but that was not to be!
25.05 miles at Fort Robinson felt like a 100 of ups and downs, steep climbs and hot.
Elk Haven riding in the Black Hills was much cooler for the most part and while we were high up,I didn't have the fear of heights that I did at Fort Rob. Still the high climbs and decents felt like way more miles than we actually rode. 30.30 miles at Elk Haven.
Totaly mileage for the week 55.36 much shorter miles than I anticipated doing, but all the body could handle! Note to self, get in shape next time!

55 miles in a week! That's awesome! We sure had fun, didn't we! So nice to meet you & Domino!

Anonymous said...

Nice meeting you and your fine boy! Hope your trip home was safe and uneventful. We went to Tammy's and it was a hot 9 hour trip. Lets do it again next year!

4 miles and 1 hour saddle time before the heat and work put a stop to the fun....

Unknown said...

July 4th 2.41 miles in 45 minutes - Bubba dripping wet before 8:30 in the morning. Hot, humid but great ride.

Unknown said...

8.18 miles on the 8th. Rode Domino in the morning and Bubba in the evening. Both did fine, finally a little cooler!

Unknown said...

7/15/12 21.09 miles figuring out the trail for novice CP at Turkey Creek ride this fall. Fricking hot is all I can say.!!!!

Unknown said...

4.3 miles on July 22. The heat was getting so bad by 10 came back home. Riding pond to pond to keep my dog cool. Wish she would stay home, but she wont.

Unknown said...

5.12 miles today. Spooky horse likes the cool weather. Rode at home on the roads and through a few fields.

Unknown said...

17.50 miles at Turkey Creek looking for some new trails with Mary McCoy as we prepare for our CTR at the end of September. We found some pretty cool trails and new access for Pete's trail at Turkey Creek. I think we will have a fabulous CTR. Tammy I think if I total these miles with what is recorded before I should have a total of 261.76 miles. Ill try and keep the total going, don't know how you do it for everyone! Thanks

Unknown said...

13.32 for a total of 275.08 miles again at Turkey Creek. Pretty good rain on Sat morning slowed us up. Colton went with and helped the guys clear trail and put in a new gate. We rode together (more rain) and trailered home so I could meet with some clients. Good weekend.

Unknown said...

277.53 total mileage. Added 2.45 tonight on Bubba - he was a good boy. I was relaxed and so was he. I think he mirrors my emotions. I was stressed and aprehensive at TC last weekend and so was he. Guess I need to rid myself of these crazy fears that keep sneaking in on me. The older I get the more fearful I get - Really, this needs to stop!

Unknown said...

279.68 total miles tonight 2.15 on Bubba. he was a very good boy again and I'm pushing him to do more and I'm really trying to relax and enjoy and when I do he is awesome.

Unknown said...

It it had been a little cooler I'd have crossed the 300 mark. Dang, off to visit my little grandson tomorrow so no ride time. 12.21 miles this weekend for total of 291.89 miles. I will cross the 300 by next weekend for sure. Rode both horses, had great rides, saw lots of turkey and deer. Just got to hot and humid. Domino seems to have more breathing problems in this humidity.

Unknown said...

318.32 total miles. Marking trails for the CTR at Turkey Creek. Wish I could get the stupid maps to upload as that is why I was riding and what we need!

Unknown said...

322.74 total miles with the addition of 4.45 miles when the GPS died. Note to self to check the batteries! I should have ridden more this beautiful weekend but with Isaacs Birthday at the zoo and dads sale I was just pulled in to many directions!

Unknown said...

325.23 total miles after 2.49 tonight. Bubba probably went 5 total but I was only on for the 2.49 miles. He had to spend quite a bit a time on the longe line before I'd get on. Seemed to want to the "Naughty" horse tonight. Once I got on he was perfect....

Unknown said...

Adding another 15.46 miles and 10 hours! Yikes I feel like I rode 40 but its slow going marking trails..... 340.69 miles for the total. Guess my goal is now to break the 400 mark.

Anonymous said...

Looks like my post from the weekend disappeared! Moonlight ride with Tammy A at TC and lisa Harder was awesome. Enjoyed the perfect weather of the weekend and rode a short ride on the new trails on Saturday and took down ribbons on Sunday. Now with tonights additional ride on Bubba should be a total of 16.43.... 357.12 total mileage.

Unknown said...

20.9 at Indian CAve. Nice cool weekend. Love my furnace! 378.02 total miles.

Unknown said...

382.04 total miles with the 4.02 late this afternoon. Had to sneak out as family was lingering, but I so wanted at least a short ride! Windy and finally wet with rain the last two nights. Will cross that 400 mark soon!

trailridingwoman said...

495.04 total with the 13 miles added from the final campout this year at Turkey Creek. What a fun weekend. I rode Tini, one of Brenda's mares- shes a young mare but did very well. Saturday we rode just a few of us and she handled the steep trails and strange horses and rider. Sunday rode in the larger group and she did amazingly well for such a young green horse. She has a good mind and look forward to having a great partnership with this mare for the next 10 years or so. Will pass that 400 mark soon with getting used to her and she to her new home - with me and my boys!

Tammy Vasa said...

I know its just a typo because you mention you will soon be passing the 400 mile mark but just wanted to make note that the YTD should be 395.04 not 495.04.

Congrats on the new mare!

trailridingwoman said...

Oh, my that was a BIG TYPO. Need to find the glasses. Thanks for catching that - I would have been really excited....NOT.

trailridingwoman said...

1.5 tonight around home getting Tini aquainted with her new surroundings! I'LL correct that Typo and make it 396.54

400.17 miles total! Rode 3.63 tonight, ran out of daylight but it was a fabulous evening riding my favorite horse Domino! Thanks buddy for all the miles this year and the incredible journeys with you the last 10 years. Everyone should be lucky to have a horse like you.

6.18 miles on Tini today riding with my grandson Colton on Domino. Great ride, beautiful afternoon. She is not used to riding with dogs, my dog spooked her twice which really didn't amount to much!
total mileage 406.35. We put 60 bales in the barn today and yesterday worked on the 25 trees they cut down, at least to clear a path to the barn for the horses. Guess I have a winter project...

trailridingwoman said...

408.24 total miles on this last night to ride after work. Have to work the rest of the week and then daylight savings time ends. Booohooo. Miss Tini did really well on her solo ride, getting used to the dog.

trailridingwoman said...

413.06 with the 4.82 tonight on Mr D. Got away from work eary because I worked late last night. Felt good to ride my favorite Horse!

Anonymous said...

416.54 total miles after a quick ride with my grandson around the cornfield! Had to get back to pattern Isaac and give Jill an afternoon off shopping without him!

Peggy Ann said...

I replied to your post; but I'm not sure you'll see it, so here's a repeat: Yes, I'd LOVE to do Mt. Rushmore again with friends! If possible, we should try to avoid that week after Father's Day, though. That's the week of the Billings Dog Show circuit, and I need to go to it in 2013. Good luck with your new Walker! Jealous!

11.2 miles today for a total of 427.74 miles. Rode Waubonsie with Dr Deb- she on Domino and me on Tini! The wind was really strong and the Leaf storms sometimes frightened Tini a little but she would settle right back down. She gets a little nervous of things behind her, so we need to work on that. Met another DD rider whose name and handle I've already forgotten. Her batteries had died so I gave her a couple of more so she could keep trackin. The camp ground had really changed alot since I was there and looks like it will be a good place to camp at next year. I'm very impressed with my new bay mare - shes smart, quick learner and gentle giant. She followed Domino over a foot bridge today with her ears pointing out either side, waiting for the "TROLL" to pop out, wish I had a picture! She's careful up and down those big hills and as she learns and gets more miles she will just get better and better. I hope she likes being a grannies horse!

trailridingwoman said...

5.78 riding Domino this afternoon. 433.52 by my calculation is the total mileage. Hope to ride some more this weekend, but have to work Saturday. Sunday is supposed to be good. Thursday I'll ride in the morning because I don't have to fix Turkey! Rode through a field out back that I have never rideen in before. Big field, but low there were hunters out there so quick retreat!

trailridingwoman said...

4.38 miles on Tini this afternoon! Solo ride for her and I. She did well. I put boots on her and rode the roads which have really bothered her. She enjoyed the boots and walked big and quick steps. We gaited for awhile and she is SMOOTH! Fitted her saddle when i got home, should have done it before now. I think she will be more comfortable on the next ride now. 437.90 total miles! Guess I might as well try for 500.... However, Hunting season opens in another week!

Anonymous said...

9.12 miles for a total of 447.02 miles. Rode both Tini and Domino this morning in shirt sleeves. Unbelievable. I think this is the first Thanksgiving I have ridden in probably 40 years! So glad my daughter cooked and she doesn't live far! Both horses wore the new Bling bridle - a want I indulged myself with!

trailridingwoman said...

5.32 miles today for a total of 452.34 miles. Probably the last ride for awhile. Hunters will be taking over next weekend. I'll have to ride in my lot or just stay inside and be safe. It was getting pretty chilly- I was going to ride Tini but wimped out as I'm cold!

trailridingwoman said...

3.10 all miles was all I was able to do this weekend! First weekend in Dec and weather was beautiful and I couldn't squeeze in hardly any time to ride! Just don't plan on riding in December usually. 455.44 total miles. Doubt I'll make it to 500 with hunting season now open and darkness when I get home. Maybe if the temps hold...

trailridingwoman said...

Had a brief moment of insanity this afternoon when I convinced myself it wasn't that cold and I should ride because of the DD and the end of the year. Took Domino out and it was beautiful, but when I turned to come home he picked the pace way up and I about froze my feet off! The woods were beautful, full of snow still sitting on the trees. Fun to see all the animal tracks, I believe there is a BIG cat out there! 4.12 miles for a total of 459.56

trailridingwoman said...

466.26 Total Miles with todays 6.70 miles riding both Tini and Domino. High 30's and breeze but sunshine made it seem pretty warm especially when not in the wind. Spent most of Tini's time teaching her sidepass and yield her hips. Rode Domino to the cemetary and back through the fields. Thanks DD I probably would not have gone riding this weekend without the incentive and it was beautiful and great to get outside and enjoy the winter wonderland!
