Team 71: King

Hi!  I am Laura King, I live in Stockbridge, Georgia and I ride and volunteer at the fabulous Calvin Center in Hampton.  I'm a graduate student now, studying atmospheric chemistry at Georgia Tech.  I don't have any horse(s) of my own, but I'm starting to look for one with the help of Gretchen Ahrens, the Calvin Center equestrian director, ideally to find a good one for me and our programs too!  Very excited to started logging some miles.

Logged 5.08 miles today with the crew from the Calvin Center on Spud today, who was a fearless and responsive partner, especially during our bushwhacking! Great weather for it, almost 70 here today!

Logged two separate tracks today of 1.89 miles on Spud in the ring with some lesson girls and then took Rolo out in the fields for another 2.08 miles. So cold tonight!

Had a pretty good weekend. Logged 4.9 miles on Chess on Friday, mostly in the ring, and then another 2.5 miles Saturday mostly in a very wet trail ride with some new folks who were real troopers and we hope to see back at the Calvin Center! I wanted to add that I've left some miles unlogged over the last few weeks due to forgetfulness (logging and using my GPS!) and one instance of a friend's tack malfunction that resulted in an injury that cut our afternoon short - she's OK and missing her buddy!

Weather here in Georgia, minus the rather wet February we're getting, has been really great for riding and we'll hit 70 again this week - sorry, Nebraska riders! Gretchen and Froo and I were looking at potential horses for me earlier this month and it was 75 out by the coast!

Trying not to forget to actually log the miles! Got in 2.5 on Spud this Saturday (premigraine...) in some very nice weather. Georgia is having a very mild if wet February! Not much time the next few weeks as I have a ton of travel coming up, sadly.

Logging miles (or remembering to!) is hard! I need to change my app to automatically put it somewhere, or comment, or something... but I got in 2 rides in the last week - one when I managed to duck out of work and take advantage of the time change and late sunset, so Gretchen (Team OTTB) and I put in 1.6 miles, and then I got in 1.54 miles 2 days later. It's getting HOT in Georgia but we saw plenty of good rain and the horses really like the real grass! No rain for the next week, though :(

Yesterday was a great day - almost! I had some great news at work, and left a little early to take advantage of the spring weather and late daylight. Gretchen (Team OTTB) and I clocked a ton of miles on Rolo (me) and Chess (Gretchen) on the trails and fields. I put in 6.2 miles before my advancing migraine (boo!) made me hop off for water and medicine, but it was the most I've gotten in continuously all year! Rolo's got this HUGE trot that beats everyone's else's canter hands down - my GPS logs his max speed at 17.36 mph. Still getting over the migraine this morning, but it's a great spring in Georgia!

Well... good news and bad news. Good news is that we are pretty sure we know a major contributor to riding migraines - my old Troxel helmet clearly isn't a good fit, which I kind of knew, but it does seem that more than about 90 minutes of wear really brings on a cascade of pain that wipes me out for more riding and usually the next 24 hours at least. Bad news is that we were cut short on our rides! Got in 3.13 on an angelic Spud and 4.17 on a hyper George before it overtook me. My helmet's 5 years old now, so I should replace it regardless...

I'm going out of town for other work the next two weekends, but hopefully we'll get back into it as summer approaches!

Ouch! Hope you're able to find a helmet that doesn't cause migraines!
