Team 5: Cindy

2011-10-07 10.56.44

A country girl born and raised in the city, I always dreamed of living in the country and owning my own horses. That dream was realized 7 years ago when my dad bought me my first horse. His health was failing and he wanted to see my dream realized before he left this earth. I was no longer a little girl, but a married woman with four kids! Rarely doing things for myself, he wanted me to finally realize that dream.  My older 3 kids were teenagers or married. Busy lives of their own. My youngest , Sierra, was 8. So in order to get time on my horse, I bought her a older horse to learn to ride on also.  We spent many hours playing with and riding our horses together. Couldn't think of a better way to spend time with my little girl. And thus the passion I had for horses soon became hers as well.  We dabbled in 4H, and she soon caught the show bug. As Sierra grew in her horsemanship I felt more confident in buying her a show horse. Now we enjoy a 4H club, and she shows at local and state level.

After show season winds down in the fall, I get to enjoy my time on the trails with friends. I've come to realize horses are my rest. When I am riding, all the stressors of life seem to go to another place. I love the quietness of the barn when I am feeding. The sighs and snorts coming from their stalls. And of course the smell of their coats! I am now living my dream in the country with my own small herd of 3 horses.

This is just a test, as it's only Dec. 29th. So this won't count.I Rode with Sierra's friends having a arena fun day Yesterday. Tested out the My Tracks gps on my phone. It records in Km's so I had to convert according to the chart I googled for miles. And I don't know how to upload the tracks to show everyone, but they are pretty funny. Only rode 2 miles according to it. I was hoping to ride and play several hours, but they are dressage girls, work their horses hard for a shorter period of time! I was ready for the 4 hour trail ride! Was still fun, and a good test.
I'm ready! Varoom, Varoom!!! Wait, that's for cars, but I'm sitting at the entry gate!

Side note: Leigh had her gps on and I used my tracks on my phone. I had about 3/4 of a mile recorded more than she. And we should have had the same. No idea how that happens.

Rode a little bit with Sierra as we tried Elite out on her first trail ride. Saw 6 deer come out of the draw. and one hawk. The natty little fly like bugs were getting to Elite, so turned around 1/2 in the field. Sierra went on to ride Sonador in the arena and I rode on by myself around our common grounds in our acreage area. A duck flew out from under our feet and skidded across the pond! Scared me more than Checkers! A dog even ran up to us. I dismounted because i wasn't sure what checkers would do. The dog circled us, growled and Checkers kept munching away on grass. The dog even nipped his feet and Checkers didn't to anything! the owner finally caught the dog and we were on our way. Sometimes it is fun to go out on my own, just to test the waters ;)

Rode Pawnee lake earlier in the day. Not too muddy even with all the rains, but the water was up. Had a pretty muddy ending crossing a "trick" water crossing ;) We came out OK, but both needed a bath when we got home! Saddle and all;) I'm still picking moss out of my saddle ;)

Had a fabulous horse trail riding vacation this week. Looks like I was able to ride about 1/2 my total riding miles in one week, and finally passed the 100 mile marker! Just goes to show what this mom can get done when nothing else is calling at her ;) Rode 3 days, twice a day. Checkers held up well, but got a bit crabby by the last night. He looked at me with a look in his eye when I unloaded him for the last time to ride, like "are you kiddin me? again?" First time ever he didn't want to load in the trailer, I think for fear he wouldn't go far and have to get back out and do it all over again! HA! But what a great week seeing friends and enjoying the beautiful country side of Nebraska. The weather was fabulous to boot!
Total for this week 37.86 miles.
Total miles to date: 117.28

Show Season for Sierra is now winding down....you know what that means don't you?!!!! Show mama gets to grab a few moments to ride herself:) And ride I did, this past weekend at the Rene Flannigan memorial ride. I didn't know Rene, but if the saying is true, you can know a person by the company they keep... The people there well represented who Rene was. Beautiful, kind, fun, generous. I loved sharing the trail with new friends, and getting to know others better.

To ride such a finished horse, she definitely knows more than me as was trying so hard to please me. She is an incredible mare.
