Mule & Mare Rider. Trail rider, Natural Horsemanship enthusiast, and have been dabbling in driving a cart. I love to ride to see what's around the next corner or over the next hill.

Never lose the wonder. Three amazing things: 1) while doing arena work sideways with no reins and no forward 2) found a way to feel the left diagonal in a posting trot 3) Bunny offered to take me on North and the corner of Maple & 103rd Rd instead of bringing me home-no direction or preference from me

What's up with Garmin Connect changing the default time to Greenwich Mean Time? Who wants that?
Temps around 34 with the windchill around 26. Blue was a good boy, we rode slow due to the snow still in the fiels. He was a good solid mount. Somethings I love about Nebraska: 1) no fences 2) flat land where you can see miles and miles ahead to what's coming 3) harvested corn where the stalks still make nice neat rows where you can work on straightness
This marks my 200 mile ride. Whew! Made it in the first month, which means I'm still running with the big dogs. We'll see how long I can keep this pace up. Also this ride makes me a member of the 20 mile club. (even if I did make the mile clubs up myself).
Jeez Um Peets! WATCH OUT EVERYONE FOR THAT 396 MILE MARKER! I bogged down there and thought I'd like to never get out of the mire to make it to the 400 MILE MARKER! I'm blaming Juanita & Christine for laying some kind of trap there. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Seven pheasants, three deer, one owl, and AJ, ME, & Blue. Sun was shining but of course the wind was blowing since I was riding. Blue was rock solid this ride. Rode him in the treeless saddle.
What a day. Trimmed a horse and a mule. Got Wonka (the two year old mule) saddled him and did ground work including mounting from the fence too bad we didn't ride anyway I could have used the 2 o4 3 steps towards the shortest ride award. Then worked on desensitizing to fly spray and then bridled him. All of it non events. He's coming along nicely. Then caught& haltered the entire herd of 14 and they got to stand tied for a couple of hours waiting on the vet to come vaccinate. Everyone did great except Willy who has always been nervous around Doc. I am now sporting some lovely rope burns, but at least it is my left hand. Jaime came and picked me up (we were late she got lost trying to find my house) and we rode at Rockford Lake SRA with some new PRR riders. Had a great time. I am ready for bed tonight though.
I would HOPE you were finally ready for bed!! You had a BIG, busy day. Plus, geez, I got home and texted you that I'd made it at quarter after 11 and was in bed already when you texted me back... at quart to 12! rofl Hope you slept well.
Nice ride, was going for a 7,7,7 miles ride (3 days in a row) so close, but the weather changed my mind. Rode the last half mile home in the rain and it started lightening. Lilly behaved well and we are startig to up the pace during our rides.
What a lovely evening for a ride. 3 of us at Rock Creek for the Wednesday night PRR. Took my mule to work, saddled up right after work and rode an hour or so before the rest of the crew showed up.
Tip: SPF 30 is not enough for these previously pasty white legs and almost 6 hours of sunshine. No wonder I never wore shorts riding before. Note to self, do NOT repeat.
Officially checked off of my bucket list of things to do. I always thought it would be Tammy Vasa who made this journey with me, but it turns out it was Pat Metcalf one of my besty riding buddies.
Great night for a ride. Perfect temperature and only a breeze. Willy was really with me emotionally tonight. Love it. Came home and put Wonka's first ride on him but didn't have the gps going for that (that was the least of my concerns). He's going to make a great saddle mule.
rode this morning before work. simulated cart driving and then sort of hitched Elsie Bratzilla to the cart tonight. can't wait until Iam able to get some driving miles with her.
hot and windy. skipped prr as the weather was iffy and I had been in lincoln all day. worked with willy rode in my parelli saddle, still not sure it's a good fit.
meet me at the gate and you might get chosen to ride again. I feel honored that my mule chooses me again especially since I worked very hard at helping him not be so emotional the night before.
We really worked on keeping our lateral bend correct circling to the left and a soft feel in our vertical flexxion. Million transitions and changing speeds in the gait (walk, gait, & cantering). I worked on my hand position and making sure my inside hand/rein didn't cross the midline.
Had some real good connection with Willy tonight. Developed his ability to stay emotionally calm in walk to trot transitions. Played a million transitions, then just hunkered down in the Parelli passenger position and let him jack hammer/moose trot until he asked until he could slow down. Good thing mules have a short flight line and he wasn't really go-ey tonight. We were trotting softly on a loose rein by the end of our session so I quit on a good note.
Lovely training ride on Blue. We got some lovely walk to back up transitions and some lovely trot to halt to back up transition. Some really nice collection and started to develop an extended trot with collection. We also got some of the best sideways we've ever ridden off the rail.
Got a second ride in tonight. Lazy yellow moon coming up tonight. Got both the Walkers ridden. Hobby rode off up the drive way and headed north on a loose rein. All went fine until the farmer & his son came out of the field on their 4 wheelers from checking their irrigation -then I had my high headed nervous wreck return. After they left she calmed down nicely but never got brave again or offered to take us any further north.
First had our parelli painted pony party. Played a bit of Can You? and tried to one up each other with the seven games with obstacles online. Saddled & mounted up and had a super nice ride. Horses, Mules, and Humans all behaved themselves. Returned home to a supper grilled by Jim and some adult beverages in pink glasses that changed to purple when a cold liquid was added, so much for the adult part. What a Great Night!
Rode Acea then came back and ponied Wonka. Dimounted ACEA & Turned off the GPS and then Ended up riding him 3 or so laps around the round pen until we had forward established a little better. Yeah!
Our good friend Dave Jones rode the new grulla morgan mare that Jim bought. We rode through some pretty rough terrain. This mare is trail broke. Let's hope she makes a great mule mamma...
WONKA's first logged miles! Yippee! First saddled ride. W,T,C'd all three gaits no problem. Circles to the right we lost impulsion. Rode out of the round pen in the yard some. Dog jumped out of the bushes at us our spook was 3 steps away from him. Gonna be a great saddle mule!
Hot. Wore my Frog Togg Chilly Pad. Blue & I practiced centered riding lateral movement techniques from side to side on the road. Discovered our forward becomes a bit broken. Practiced walk to halt to back up transitions.
Had a fantastic 2nd ride on Jim's new mare. Arena riding watching watching Chris school one the in training 3yo's. There is nothing like learning from a pro!
Satellites-phone connection gypped me miles on garmin fit-ergh especially since I bothered to go out after dark to ride when it's still 91 degrees out and humid. Should have been well over a mile. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/200444700
:-( That stinks Leigh. Hey, 'the boy' goes to daycare Tues, Wed and Thurs now, wanna try to get together some morning - early?! (as long as neither of us have other 'pesky' obligations of course :-))
Practiced coon jumping before we rode. Willy cleared 38" from a standstill without any work at all. Didn't try for any higher. I hate coming home with a heat & humidity headache from riding. Blech and double blech. Had some amazing moments of unity during our ride. He sometimes gets emotional trotting out and I was ever so subtley putting feel into the rein and he was reaching for me and lowering his head. Gotta love the try in this mule.
Nice ride tonight. Flushed up a pheasant right underneath us with only a spook in place, flushed a quail maybe 10' in front of us with barely a look at it, flushed an owl out of tree don't think Willy cared at all to even look, and the coyotes serenaded us home...
Lovely evening ride. Neighbor's new dog followed us down the road until he could retrieve him, then his toddler in diapers chased us probably a quarter mile down the road! If that don't beat all. Thankfully my mare is apparently toddler desensetized.
Will post the garmin link as soon as I waste all my riding time tomorrow on the phone with customer support. *&%^$ bleeping garmin connect updates. ugh!
Stats: Max speed 15.9 (bolting away from those awful mule eating cows, through the ditch, and a quarter mile around the cattle). Moving avg: 6.0 (we had an awesome trotting workout, first half mile of warm up, trotting over 7.5 miles , then walking one tired mule the last half mile home). Moving time 1 hour 24 minutes.
Hot and humid already this morning. ugh. Did get to ride under the Blue Moon this morning as well as yesterday evening. Off to work at Rock Creek and see who is riding there this holiday weekend.
100+ Degrees today. I really really really hate riding when you can't tell whether the salty wet running down your face is your sweat or if it is your tears from being so miserable from the heat! Wish today would have been cooler so I could have ridden longer.
WINDY! had to twist the dial another notch to tighten the helmet down and even then the 60mph gusts did their best to lift it. This mule should have been name PePe Le Pew like the cartoon character, her lope is sort of a dun ta dun ta dun along. In fact I looked over and the dog was loping (loping not running) faster than we were! Gaitor wasn't much phased by the wind but I sure dried out fast.
Worked on some Liz Graves exercises, getting Hobby to collect physically but keep her neck loose and shakey to break up the stepping pace into a running walk. Worked on some tear drop exercises, riding circles, and rail work.
Super lesson with Sherry Jarvis at Wilderness Stables. It is an indoor arena so these were the only miles the gps unit picked up. Three hours of riding time should have been at least 8 miles of riding. sigh... but on the other hand had an awesome lesson I wouldn't have traded for anything; had Hobby doing some pretty advanced moves and spent some time clarifying and refining how I was riding said moves.

WINDY! had to twist the dial another notch to tighten the helmet down and even then the 60mph gusts did their best to lift it.

There is a secret message written in today's ride. I have come to the conclusion I suck at ride writing but I had to try. Windy again today. It's always windy on my days off, whine whine whine.
"Mules Rule". Love it. The L in the last word looked quite challenging.
